Violet by Hole was playing on the radio this morning when I turned on the car. I don’t think I’ve heard a Hole song for a couple years, so it was like a reunion with a forgotten friend. I don’t remember being all that fond of their songs in the past, but hearing Violet made me realize that I do miss hearing them. I remember, back in the day, Micah had a guitar magazine that had the music for Doll Parts, so he’d play and I’d sing that wonderfully weird song. I think Courtney said it all, when she said:
i am doll eyes
doll mouth, doll legs
i am doll arms, big veins
Words to live by my friends… words to live by.
I remember in my high school resource period (circa 1994-5) listening to two whipper snappers speak of Hole and how cool they were. I remember thinking, "I can't believe people like this crap. This music and its popularity means certain death for all the good things I enjoy listening to." And it really was. I have been challenged to find any good music that really gets me since 1993 or so.
But I also read a cool article by David Crosby (linked from slashdot) about why the music 'business' today sucks and why it's hard to find good music. That fired me up a bit and reminded me of my true purpose:
Sorry to jump into your blog site, but I haven't been able to reach any other email addresses.
That means I haven't been able to reach my work email address to see if you've posted any wish items to be brought back, so sorry!!
Dad and I were at the tower of London today. It's so hard to wrap your brain around how old the buildings are here. Well I had better go dad's waiting.
Love ya and I'll call when we land in Seattle.
Mom
Oh, that's such a mom thing to do! ;) No, I never sent any emails, I couldn't think of anything... Enjoy the rest of your vaca! (short for vaction, not spanish for cow).
Funny, but I thought I detected some sarcasm in your post, there, Jake.
Hey, Billy - keep looking. You're probably not going to find much that's interesting on mainstream (or even alternative) radio. There is a hell of a lot of crap out there that has to compete with a hell of a other crap for air time. But there are new and interesting bands out there to be found.
I get despondent about the state of music every once in a while, but then inevitably something comes along to pull me up and make me pay attention.
Lately it's been NERD and Mars Volta. But that's me.
Jake - that post from your mother and your response was just about the funniest thing I have read in eons.
