BSG

Though I might be entering a golden age of sci-fi books, the realm of sci-fi TV has seen better days... Enterprise is being cancelled, and frankly I don’t blame UPN at all. The show never really seemed to find its groove, so I won’t be sad to see it go. Stargate:SG1 has gone downhill, O’Neil as General is much less fun, and the show has become WAY too self-aware for my tastes. Stargate Atlantis is barely ok, the Wraith bad guys are cartoonish and one dimensional. But wait, what’s this new show? Wasn’t that a show back in the 70’s? Yes, but it’s back and it’s spectacular!

Battlestar Galactica is the yummiest new show on TV. It has a gritty “realism” that makes all the other sci-fi shows feel like dress-up. The characters are interesting and varied and the show spends plenty of time letting them talk and work through their issues. And then when the Cylons show up, the space battle scenes are great! Oh, and dare I say, the show is sexy? Dr. Baltar’s temptress/tormentor ‘fembot’ spices up the show nicely without it feeling overtly gratuitous. SciFi channel recently announced that the show has been picked up for a second season, to start this summer. Yay!

Oh, and not to mention one of the most origninal sci-fi tv show music EVER! (ok, ok, maybe not "ever" but at least on the level of movie quality) Think John Williams with a whole lot of "grit" and "emotion". You just have to listen.

The composer is:

His site has some very good samples that you won't see on the CD at Amazon. Also, there is a song that is used in the final episode of season one. Lemme just say, "shivers up my spine". The song is called "The Shape of Things to Come".

Philosophy classes in schools will eventually use the screenplay of this show to talk about concepts of God and god and gods.

Can you tell that I like it?
