Did you hear about Hurricane Daniel? I did. Last week I got an email from work saying that Hurricane Daniel was near Hawaii but wasn’t expected to reach the islands. Then a few days later they said that it WOULD reach the islands but would probably be downgraded to a tropical storm by then. As of yesterday, Daniel officially became a tropical storm, so I guess we’re safe. It should be here by the end of the week. Weird, I live within reach of hurricanes now...
Hmm...interesting. I don't remember hearing about Hawaii getting hit by hurricanes much, but perhaps I just wasn't paying attention. Do you know if there's a history of a lot of problems with that or if it's possible but pretty rare?
are hurricanes called typhoons in the pacific, or is that a lie my high school earth science teacher told me?
Hurricanes in Hawaii are relatively rare, but it only takes one, right? Hurricane Iniki did some serious damage in Hawaii back in 1992...
Regarding hurricanes vs. typhoons in the Pacific... we're both right! According to this science-y looking site they're called hurricanes west of the dateline and typhoons east of the dateline in the North Pacific. Then when you hit the South Pacific, the east/west dividing line is 160E, to the east are hurricanes and to the west are severe tropical cyclones. And even don’t get me STARTED on the Indian Ocean!
