Footy IM
Jake says:
I watched two games of footy
last night
Jake says:
it's kind of like a game of only the running game in american football
Billy says:
I watched a game or two before
Jake says:
this isn't australian rules football
Jake says:
apparently that is different
Billy says:
weird
Billy says:
So they don't throw it?
Jake says:
there is: Rugby League, Rugby
Jake says:
they can only pass backwards
Billy says:
ic
Billy says:
maybe they should
just play 'merican footbal
Jake says:
they get 6 downs
Jake says:
and then they usually kick it on the 5th down similar to football
Jake says:
basically, passing is always back, but kicking can be forward
Jake says:
so the runner could kick it forward to a teammate
Jake says:
but, usually everyone is behind
the ball runner
Jake says:
so when they kick, they kick it really high instead of really far
Billy says:
It sounds like a made up game
Jake says:
to give time for people to run out to get in position to catch it
Jake says:
and the crazy thing is there is no break
Jake says:
as soon as there's a down, they push the ball back and start the next
play
Jake says:
american
football originated in 1892
rugby league originated in 1895
Jake says:
weird
Jake says:
here's something funny
Jake says:
football has halfbacks, right?
Billy says:
si
Jake says:
rugby league has a halfback, and another 'half' position called 5/8th
Billy says:
l2math
Jake says:
i
chuckled when i saw that
Jake says:
anyway, the major aspect of the game is to pass off the ball when you're
about to go down
Billy says:
sure
Jake says:
which looks weird to my american eyes
Jake says:
that they keep tossing it off... kind of looks basketball ish
Billy says:
That's how the last play of a close game looks if the offense
needs one more score but is out of time
Billy says:
I can imagine doing nothing but that would be exhausting, so I'm
guessing most of the players are soccer-sized?
Jake says:
huge legs, yah... though there were some bigger guys
Jake says:
the tackles usually aren't huge impacts... they grab you and wrestle
you to the ground
Billy says:
no pads?
Jake says:
the runner actually struggles, because they aren't considered down
until the ref calls him held or pinned or whatever
Jake says:
no pads or helmets
Jake says:
the guys were looking banged up
Jake says:
oh, here's a pretty interesting thing... to score (they call it a
try) you have to be in the endzone area, and actually
put the ball down onto the ground (while in control of it)
Jake says:
so often the guy gets tackled just over the line, and they do video
replay to see if he actually touched the ball down
Jake says:
but here's the super funky part... there are extra points from
kicking, just like in football
Jake says:
but the spot from which the kicker kicks the ball is like 20 meters
out, but in line from where the runner put the ball down in the end zone
Jake says:
so if the runner has time, he runs to the center of the endzone before putting it down
